The challenge:

The FA is responsible for the development and progression of former players on their coaching journey, and they wanted to better understand the challenges, opportunities and experiences of others who had undertaken this journey.

By gathering better information and analysing it in detail, the FA wanted to come away with findings that would help shape their programme and deliver the best learning and development environment for people, in support of their goal to develop and sustain world class coaches.

This work also needed to support the development of the FA’s leadership framework.

What we delivered:

Performance Edge reached out to our extensive network of former clients, partners and contacts in the world of elite sport, to gather information in support of the FA’s goals.  The team conducted 1:1 interviews with professionals from professional rugby, football, the NFL, baseball franchises, cricket, motor sport and Olympic sports.  This was supported by a detailed open source research project.

The findings of the interviews and the research project were collated and analysed, drawing out key themes, as well as broader trends in coaching and development.  The information was played back to senior figures on the FA coaching programme, to inform the next steps of developing the programme.
